Mexico is still U.S.’s main trading partner and Port Laredo continues to grow

Recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau revealed that Mexico remains first place as a trading partner of the United States for the second month in a row since August, increasing its total trade by 23% to $67.4B in September, comparing the same period in 2021.

The main imports from Mexico to the U.S. consisted of computers ($3.6B), passenger vehicles ($3.3B), and auto parts ($2.8B). Top exports from the U.S. to Mexico consisted of gasoline ($3.5B), auto parts ($1.5B), and liquified natural gas ($1.49B).

Canada followed Mexico in the ranking, being the 2nd most important U.S. trading partner, increasing by 22% ($66.5 billion in total compared to September 2021).
Among the U.S. 450 ports of entry, including airports, seaports, and border crossings, Laredo, Texas ranked second place for the second month in a row, following behind Chicago O’Hare International Airport in trade volume.

Port Laredo increased 25% year-over-year its total trade with the world by $26.1B in September. This trade includes mainly the import of motor vehicle parts, passenger vehicles, and heavy-duty trucks; and motor vehicle parts, diesel engines, and gasoline as exports.

Laredo’s commercial truck crossings have increased by 10% and 9.4% in September and October of 2022, respectively. From January through September 2022, Laredo has processed 2.1 million truck crossings, which represents 48% of the total top 5 gateways of the U.S. according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
